Lansing Township History
The first settler in Lansing township was H. O. Clark, known as “Hunter Clark.” He came in the fall of 1853, took a claim and built the first log house in Mower County near the Cedar River in the current Oakwood Cemetery. This was in the northeast quarter of section 34. He sold his claim to William Baudler in 1855 and moved away.
Lansing township and village are named for Alanson B. (aka A. B.) Vaughan. He and his family settled in the spring of 1855. He was also instrumental in the growth of Austin and partly responsible for Austin being the county seat. A separate page is created for him.
Lansing Township was organized May 11, 1858. The legal voters met in the old log schoolhouse in section 27 and elected the first officers: Supervisors: A. B. Vaughan, chairman, Jonas Haney, E. A. Snow; Clerk: Phineas D. Vaughan; Assessor: James McLaughlin; Collector: Enoch Vaughan; Overseer: J. H. Watkins; Justices of the Peace: A. B. Vaughan and Emery Snow; Constable: John P. Lyons; Overseer of Highways: John P. Lyons.
Communities in Lansing Township are Lansing village, Andyville, Corning, Ramsey (annexed into Austin), the northern part of City of Austin and Mapleview (independent).
Flour mills using the power of the Cedar River and creameries were important early industries.
